Solopreneur or Entrepreneur – what’s the difference?

When you hear about people starting their own business, they are often referred to as an entrepreneur. But there’s another term that although it’s not new, it’s become more popular as of late – solopreneur. Many entrepreneurs start out as solopreneurs, meaning they are the only “employee” of the company, but if you plan on working by yourself forever with no plans to add staff – Yup, you are a solopreneur. The terms are often interchangeable but there are some very distinct although subtle differences between the two.

To be clear, neither solopreneurship nor entrepreneurship is better or worse. Neither is easier or more difficult. These are two very different, but equally valid, ways to build a business.

Buying vs. Building. When it comes to building a business, many entrepreneurs are happy to put in the blood, sweat, and tears, but they usually aren’t as attached to the business as a solopreneur. Many entrepreneurs build their business with the plan of selling to a larger company or hiring someone else to run it so they can move on to the next idea. Entrepreneurs have no problem building a variety of businesses over the course of their career. Once it’s running smoothly, they often exit to start another venture.
Solopreneurs start businesses to fit their desired lifestyle and, in many cases, to pursue a personal passion. They usually have little interest in creating an empire or looking for a buyer to sell to. They are usually tired of working for someone else and want flexibility and control. Solopreneurs tend to work on just one company consistently.

Working In vs. On. While both types work hard on the business, solopreneurs are usually more focused on working in the business to get the work done. Entrepreneurs are usually happy to leave some responsibility with the team and spend more time out doing sales, networking, and just getting the word out. It’s not that solopreneurs can’t be great networkers, as well, they can and are, but they are solely responsible for the work getting done.

Delegating vs. Doing. Entrepreneurs enjoy managing others and building their team. Even if they start as a solopreneur, an entrepreneur is waiting for the day they can start building their empire – they are comfortable leading and relying on a team of people to accomplish their goals. Solopreneurs have a harder time outsourcing or delegating work, they prefer to handle most if not all of it themselves. They enjoy being knee deep in all the workings of what it takes to complete projects. Solopreneurs are workers by nature.

Entrepreneurs are more likely to also have an office outside of the home – a place to network, take meetings, and have employees work. Not that solopreneurs can’t have space outside the home, but most are more than happy to work from a home office. Unless you are at Red Barn – we are 100% virtual – no brick and mortar.

Not ready for retirement? Maybe it’s time to start a consulting or coaching business

Starting your own business isn’t exactly for the faint of heart, but with so many talented executives trying to figure out what’s next – for many the next logical step is to join the world of Entrepreneurship. We’ve been doing a ton of research lately on what is holding people back from starting their own businesses – specifically people who could easily transition from working in Corporate America to becoming a coach or consultant. From what’s holding them back to what they think the perks will be – the information was enlightening.

Leave behind a legacy. For many, it’s not about the money but about leaving something lasting behind for the next generations to benefit from. Sure, they’ve left an impact at the companies they’ve worked for, but that’s just not enough. They want to share their knowledge and experiences with the world. Becoming a coach or consultant allows you to mentor and help others achieve what you have.

Ease into retirement. For many people who have worked a 9 to 5 job in Corporate America for longer than they will care to admit, adjusting to retirement just doesn’t sound appealing. They still want to contribute to society, have a purpose, and feel like they are making a difference. We find many individuals create a “Side Hustle” working as a consultant on a part-time basis while they ease into the work free world.  Truth be told – some just keep on working because they love it!

Work with who you want. When you work for someone else, choosing who your coworkers are and what clients you serve probably isn’t your decision. BUT when you start your own coaching or consulting firm, it’s on your terms. In addition to choosing your own hours, you can also decide if you want any employees or prefer being a one-person show. You also get the freedom to choose who your clients are, what you want to charge, and what the terms are. It’s a Win-Win.

Fear of failure. This is an interesting one. Regardless of how old or how much scar tissue you have, fear of failure just doesn’t go away for some. Of course, starting your own business is scary, but for most, they just don’t know where to start or never really thought it was something they could do. With so many resources out there to help, is regret really an option?

It’s all who you know. Many executives don’t realize that they already have a gold mine of connections that they have amassed over their decades in their corporate career. For some, even working as a consultant for their current company may be an option. Once you spread the word on LinkedIn and in your networking circles, you may be surprised just how many people want to work with you.

It’s never too late. Starting a business doesn’t have an age restriction. Bob Parsons started Go Daddy at age 47, Charles Randlett Flint was 61 when he started IBM, and Colonel Sanders was 62 when the KFC franchise was born. As the saying goes, age is just a number. It doesn’t prevent you from going after your dreams or goals, and it certainly won’t prevent you from starting your own business. After all, those decades of experience count for something!

From Employee to Consultant – the Transition

There is so much damn talent in the Boomer pool.  As part of that generation, I’m continually fascinated by the number of us who have zero interest in really retiring.  Sure, most want to get out of the structure and politics of Corporate USA, but they aren’t ready to drive a golf cart around the Villages in Florida yet – they want to share their brain power and get paid for it.

Many execs I talk to are fascinated with the prospect of becoming a business coach or a consultant specific to their field of expertise – be it operations, leadership, sales or marketing.  Some get even more granular and are industry specific such as finance, manufacturing or insurance.  They want the flexibility, they want to choose who they work with, and they want to feel like they have purpose – that they are creating a legacy.

The roadblock happens when they actually have to launch a business and market themselves.  Most stop at this point and determine it’s not worth the effort – they become overwhelmed and either stick with their job for another 10 years or head to Boca and become snowbirds.

It’s not that difficult to make the transition. It’s a process. 

  • The key is to flesh out your biz idea while at your current job. Let’s actually find out what your target client profile is, what you will charge, what your capacity is, and hell – let’s land a few clients.  In other words – let’s try it before you commit.
  • In the consulting world – you don’t NEED a ton of clients to make 6 figures. You just need the right ones.  (see the first bullet)
  • You do need to be a biz owner – so you have to set up an LLC, get insurance, hire an accountant and an attorney, manage the books and pay taxes – oh and find damn health insurance which is often a big expense. If you can ride the health insurance coattails of a spouse or partner – that’s a win!
  • You do need to market yourself and be a salesperson. This is the part where most execs melt down – but deep breath, this isn’t all that difficult.  No need for a 5 figure website and fancy branding package to start – let’s first see if you like it.  Next, we start with your current network – there is a ton of low hanging fruit to tap into for your first clients.   Once you’ve decided to go forward, setting up a simple website and building out content, nurturing your pipeline and clients will be important.  That’s Phase 2 and you can always outsource that part – marketing is a revenue generator not an expense.

I’ve coached countless people through this process with grand results. Plus, I’m one of “those” – I left my corporate job to become a biz coach and marketing consultant/implementor.  In other words – I’ve been in your shoes.

If you aren’t ready to retire – don’t.  Consider the consultant gig – it’s beyond rewarding on so many levels.  Legacy type rewarding – you are literally will change lives and make a great living doing it…on your terms since YOU are the CEO.

The Consultant Gig – can you make it happen?

Lately, I’ve been chatting with more than one “Mid-Life Re-brander” – those who have lived in Corporate America for a bit, gained a ton of knowledge and skills, and now in their 50’s and 60’s wants to leave and become a consultant.

The reality is, most won’t do it because it’s tough and scary leaving a 6-figure job and benefits to face the unknown. I know – I’ve been there, but I did it. The solution is, you need to test the waters – dip your toes into the world of Consulting. Find a few clients, try your skills, and see if you are good at it, and more importantly do you like it! The secret is doing this while you still have a 9-5 gig.

Disclosure: Some companies forbid side work while in their employ, so you need to check out your employment agreement and non-competes. Typically, if you aren’t taking money away from them, you are fine. Better safe than sorry, if you are at all iffy, contact an attorney and ask.

Here’s how to get started and get to 100K+ in revenue fairly quickly:

  1. Super Powers. What are you great at and love to do. What can you get lost in for hours? This is obviously a key component of success. You need to clearly define what you will be offering.
  2. Your early adopters. Once you figure out what your “offer” will be, you need to hone in on some early adopters who have a specific pain point that your offer solves. Make a list.
  3. Create a mini business plan. This doesn’t have to be a novel but you need something! What will your offer look like to your early adopters – what will the deliverables be, what will the cost be, what will the turn around be, and how will you do the work, so it won’t interfere with your job.
  4. Begin approaching your early adopters and sharing your idea with some key people in your network.
  5. Sign up 1 client. Test your new offer, tweak as needed. When you feel confident you delivered as promised and you enjoyed the process – go for Client #2. Rinse & Repeat
  6. Pick a Date. You’ve tested the waters and decided you can make this work. Set a date that you will exit your 9-5. Write it down.
  7. Pick a Dollar Amount. Determine how much you need to make in recurring income per month before your due date. Now work backwards to ensure your price point and working capacity matches. This is money you NEED versus what you WANT.
  8. Make sure you have a viable pipeline to add to the workload once you leave – you should have at least 5-7K in recurring income by the time you leave your job, and then be able to increase that immediately with new income streams.
  9. Bridges Secure. Don’t burn bridges with your current employer – in fact they may be an ideal client! (PS. I did this and secured $60K in revenue my first year in business at Red Barn). If you are great at your job, your boss may not want to let you go. Having you as a 1099 will cost them less and you can still be a viable team member – allowing for a slow transition out if that works for everyone!
  10. Go Time. Stick to your date unless there are real extenuating circumstances such as illness.

The 10-Steps may seem simple, and in fact the process is, but don’t be fooled, there is a lot of hard work involved. Early mornings, weekends, and nights working on and in your new business model. It’s far easier easing into the Consulting world than leaping in without a cushion.
